Yesterday, August 29, was the grand finale of the 2015 World Sango festival that took place at the palace of the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola lll. They are from Oyo, Osogbo, Ede, Ibadan, Ilorin, Saki, Igbope, Igboho, Isemi Ile, Igbo Ora, Ayete, Lagos, Ekiti, Iseyin, and Ogbomoso. They perform to the delight of guests who had come to witness the revitalization of Oyo Empire culture and heritage.

The Sango festival is the most significant and ancient festival in Oyo, since it is deeply linked to the survival of identity, culture and history of the people. It celebrates the spiritual connection between Sango and the Alaafin. Oyo city was the capital of an empire that dominated the whole territory of southwest Nigeria. It extended to Benin, Togo and Ghana. The old Oyo Empire was responsible for the dissemination of culture, language, technologies, practices, norms and value system of the people of Yoruba as well as the traditions of Sango.
