A schoolgirl from Beswick Melissa Poll made a card for the Queen of England congratulating her on becoming the longest reigning monarch. But a 6-year-old girl was upset that she hadn’t been allowed into Buckingham Palace to personally present the card.
Mirror reports that Melissa and her granny visited Buckingham Palace on a family trip, but because of the tube strike they had no time to queue to get inside.
The girl did not give up and wrote a letter the Queen, in which she explained that she was disappointed she could not go inside the palace. Apart from this, Melissa invited the monarch to her birthday party.
The schoolgirl sent a letter to Buckingham Palace and within a few days Melissa received a delightful response from the Queen’s lady-in-waiting.
The monarch thanked Melissa for the card and apologized that she could not attend the birthday party.
“The Queen wishes me to write and thank you for your letter in which you tell Her Majesty about your disappointment at not being able to tour the State Apartments at Buckingham Palace.
“Her Majesty was sorry to hear that you and your grandmother tried twice to see inside the palace and that, for various reasons, you were unlucky.”
“Although unable to come to your birthday party, the Queen greatly appreciated your kind thought for her, and I hope you have a lovely time with your family and friends on September 27.
“I am to thank you too for your kind thought in writing about the forthcoming splendid milestone in Her Majesty’s reign,” the letter read.
The girl was so delighted and happy that she took the card with her on her first day back at The Church of England School of the Resurrection.
Melissa’s grandmother, Denise Hurst, said:
“We passed the gardens at Buckingham Palace and I told her that is where the Queen hosts parties.
“Melissa said would she like to come to my birthday party. She did a congratulations card to the Queen with a picture of her on the front with a message inside.
“They obviously read the letter. She said she could not make it to the birthday party and things like that. She was delighted. Although, she was disappointed she couldn’t make it to the birthday party.”
Earlier this year, four Nigerians received the inaugural Queen’s Young Leaders Awards at the Buckingham Palace.
The award winners were recognised by the Queen of England for raising awareness and inspiring change on a variety of different issues including education, gender equality, mental health and disability equality.
