Three Nigerian nationals were injured in the crane crash accident that occurred in Mecca’s Grand Mosque, Saudi Arabia. The injuries were not life-threatening, and the three Nigerians are being treated at one of the local hospitals.
Addressing journalists at an Abuja press conference, Mallam Abdullahi Mukhtar, chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, did not disclose the names of the affected Nigerians, did disclose that one of them is from Gombe, and two others from Kaduna states.
“On the commission’s part, we have advised the various states pilgrims’ board not to allow their pilgrims to go close to the Grand Mosque for now. They have adhered strictly to our directive and it is yielding positive results,” Mukhtar said.
He added that, as at Saturday, close to 59,000 pilgrims are in Saudi Arabia, promising to transport the remaining ones before the annual Hajj exercise begins.
Earlier today, a press release was issued by President Muhammadu Buhari’s office, conveying Buhari’s condolences to the world Muslims and directing the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Nigerian Embassy in Saudi Arabia to monitor the situation as it develops and ensure the security and well-being of all Nigerian pilgrims.
With less than two weeks left until the annual Hajj pilgrimage, the Saudi Arabian Grand Mosque, Masjid al-Haram, is filled with worshippers from all over the world. On September 11, a huge red construction crane crashed into it. Latest reports indicate at least 107 people have been killed, and over 230 sustained injuries, with the numbers likely to grow in the following days.
Indonesian, Indian, Iranian and Egyptian citizens are said to have lost their lives during the freak accident.
An investigation has been launched to look into the reasons behind the collapse and assess the general damage. Officials say a stormy weather is to blame, as international correspondents add concerns had been previously raised over safety measures on Saudi construction sites.
The disaster will not stop the annual Hajj exercise, as up to two million people are expected to arrive at the site.
The Grand Mosque is currently surrounded by 15 large cranes amid major redevelopment work. The crane in question belongs to a German crane company operated by the Bin Laden family’s consortium, who are heading the expansion of the Holy Mosque for it accommodate over two million people at once.
Masjid al-Haram is the largest mosque in the world and surrounds Islam’s holiest place, the Kaaba.
