An Ikeja magistrates’ court 5, Ogba, Lagos, on Monday September 21 sentenced a trader, Ibe Orji to two years imprisonment for stabbing his co-trader, Gabriel Ani with broken bottle all over his body.
Orji allegedly committed the offence on February 14, 2014 at Super bus stop, near Abule Egba, Lagos, where both of them had been road-side traders.
Sentencing Orji, the presiding chief magistrate, Tajudeen Alias, noted that the verdict was meant to serve as deterrent to others.
However, the convict smiled out of the dock because he has been in detention for about 19 calendar months as the sentence took effect from the date he was remanded prison at Kirikiri, Apapa.
Presenting, the facts of the case, police prosecutor, Sergeant Jimah Isedeghe, narrated to the court how the complainant was fired and a friend gave him a bottle of malt.
As he was relaxing, the convict came to call him a beggar. While Ani protested, Orji continued to mock him. A fight ensued and Orji broke a bottle and then stabbed Ani all over his body.
Witnesses arrested Orji and handed both men to the police. The complainant was sent to the hospital for treatment. Orji was later arraigned in court.
He had earlier pleaded ‘not guilty’ and got remanded in prison since there was nobody to stand surety for him. Orji later changed his plea to ‘guilty’.
