A baby boy who was born with four arms and four legs is being hailed as “God’s baby”, Baruipar, West Bengal State, India.
The eight-limbed baby has attracted thousands of visitors desirous to take a glance of the blessed child. The yet-to-be-named baby has been dubbed “God Boy” by his family due to his resemblance to Hindu god Brahma.
One of the relatives said: “When he first came out we couldn’t believe it. The nurses said he was badly deformed but I could see that this was a sign from God. In fact, this is a miracle, it’s God’s baby. Indian God’s have extra limbs just like this.”
People from all over the country are clamouring to see the child. Hundreds are crying in the streets, others are praying and setting up camp here. Some are even panicking and believe this is a sign of the end of the world.
Meanwhile medics say that the baby’s deformity is the result of the arms and legs of a twin joining on to the foetus in the womb. Polymelia is a birth defect involving limbs, in which the affected individual has more than the usual number of limbs.
The extra limb is most commonly shrunken and/or deformed. Sometimes an embryo started as conjoined twins, but one twin degenerated completely except for one or more limbs, which end up attached to the other twin.
